On June 19 our Siouxland Chapter had our quarterly meeting at the clubhouse of Prairie Green Golf Course in Sioux Falls. We welcomed Jason Gusso, one of the chapter's founding members, to speak on "Surety Bond Underwriting - It's an Art. Not a Science." Jason covered the topic well and responded to numerous questions from the attendees. He discussed what a bond provides, types of bonds, the steps of underwriting, and a surety's options in a claim situation. Jeff Pray, also a member of the Siouxland Chapter, then spoke on insurance products, covering in particular the lines of directors & officers liability, crime insurance, and pollution insurance. Greetings, I’m hoping that everyone is in good spirits as the weather has warmed up and it has started to feel a little bit more like spring! As the rivers are expected to crest today and tomorrow – I hope that all our members have been able to stay dry and haven’t been seriously impacted by the flood waters. Please continue to keep those impacted in your thoughts and prayers, as many people, business and farms throughout the Midwest are still responding to the devastating implications of rising flood waters. It isn’t new news that unemployment remains low and hiring skilled employees continues to be a challenge to many employers. More important than hiring ...

Our next quarterly meeting is fast approaching on September 20th.  We opted to do an afternoon meeting followed by a social to allow for more networking opportunities.  Please remember to RSVP if you have not already done so. Our golf tournament was successful again. This has allowed us to distribute $7,000 locally for scholarships and student programs that are construction related.  Thank you all very much who contributed to being a corporate sponsor and also to all the team sponsors.  Without your dedication to this mission it would not be possible. In August we again packed lunches for the Lunch is Served program.  This allows low income workers to ...

What does great leadership mean to you? At our March quarterly meeting held on March 15, we had the opportunity to participate in an interactive workshop, led by Dr. Danielle Crough, where we examined what great leadership looks like. The primary emphasis of the workshop was to examine leadership through the eyes of followers, as was demonstrated by the title of the meeting: "Want To Be A Better Leader? Think Like A Follower." Through the interactive workshop, we discussed the concepts with other attendees and reflected on how to apply those to current projects or leadership situations. We also discussed leadership myths, shared leadership books, and discussed ...

A captive is very simply an insurance company owned by a non-insurance parent. Derek educated the group on the types of organizations and applications where a small group captive may be advantageous, particularly because of the 831(b) tax ...
