December Meeting & Holiday Social
On December 7, 2016, members of our Siouxland CFMA chapter gathered for our final meeting of the 2016 year. We had two great speakers presenting, and followed those presentations with our annual holiday social with networking, excellent hors d'oeuvres, and a few drinks.
Our first speaker was Derek Martisus of Marsh & McLennan Agency. Derek came all the way from Burlington, VA to present to the group on small captives. A captive is very simply an insurance company owned by a non-insurance parent. Derek educated the group on the types of organizations and applications where a small group captive may be advantageous, particularly because of the 831(b) tax election. Derek also explained the Marsh approach toward analyzing captives, which typically begins with a feasibility study for an organization.
Our second speaker was James Spellos, President of Meeting U., whose mission is to help people become more productive and com-fortable with technology. Attendees were kept engaged as James covered the latest and greatest in technology impacting the construction industry, and also provided numerous tips for ensuring security of data and information. A number of the simple steps to ensure security include (1) Updated anti-virus software, (2) Updated anti-malware solution, (3) VPN (including a personal VPN), (4) Utilizing a password manager, and (5) Ensuring two-factor authentication.
Following the event, Callaways provided great food and drinks for our annual holiday social. A good time was had by all!
We look forward to seeing you at our March 2017 quarterly meeting. Reserve the morning of March 15 and plan to join us for an engaging workshop on leadership!
